Ethio-Telecom, the only telecom operator in Ethiopia requested the government for a policy reform to expand in some parts of Eastern Africa.
Chief Executive Officer of Ethio-Telecom reported his company’s aspiration to go out and take advantage of neighboring countries potentials on an interview with ‘The Reporter Newspaper’.
The Telecom Sector of Ethiopia will not be Liberalized Soon
Ethio-Telecom’s latest plan for a regional expansion is somehow contradictory with the Ethiopian government policy stance with regards to liberalizing its telecom sector, which is under the monopoly of Ethio-Telecom.The CEO is also with a view similar to the government in liberalizing Ethiopia’s telecom sector.“It is very early neither to liberalize the telecom sector in Ethiopia nor to provide second licenses,” he told The Reporter.
Is Ethio-Telecom efficient enough in Ethiopia to expand?
According to the CEO, who referred the ranking to the third quarter report of the International Telecom Unit (ITU), Ethio-Telecom ranks as Africa’s second largest operator and 38th at the global level with 47 million mobile subscribers.
The companies ambitions are great, but as the only telecom operator in Ethiopia,Ethio-Telecom did not face any kind of competition so far. With the growing telecommunication technology and a high demand; Ethio-Telecom got the better of the telecom sector in Ethiopia and the companies achievements can be attributed to it’s monopoly.
Ethio-Telecom needs to take care of many issues in Ethiopia before planing to expand continental. Are Ethiopian customers satisfied with the companies service? There should be a nationwide review program that can reflect user experience. Currently there is little or no means of measuring Ethio-Telecoms efficiency.

The finalized ranking relies on over 50 factors to determine a given nation's Power Index ("PwrIndx") score. This allows smaller, though more technologically-advanced, nations to compete with larger, lesser-developed ones. Modifiers in the form of bonuses and penalties are added to refine the list. Some things to observe in regards to the finalized ranking:
• Ranking does not simply rely on the total number of weapons available to any one country but rather focuses onweapon diversity within the number totals to provide a better balance of firepower available (i.e. fielding 100 minesweepers does not equal the strategic and tactical value of fielding 10 aircraft carriers).
• Nuclear stockpiles are NOT taken into account but recognized / suspected nuclear powers receive a bonus.
• Geographical factors, logistical flexibility, natural resources and local industry influence the final ranking.
• Available manpower is a key consideration; nations with large populations tend to rank higher.
• Land-locked nations are NOT penalized for lack of a navy; naval powers ARE penalized for lack of diversity in available assets.
• NATO allies receive a slight bonus due to the theoretical sharing of resources.
• Current political / military leadership is NOT taken into account.
